ON DA DREAM CALENDAR

This experimental design, part of Vy Trinh's exhibition ‘ON DA DREAM’, combines jagged solar and lunar times. Two calendar blocks are displayed side by side, tearing, the days chase one another, forever behind and ahead. This representing the bustling pace of Vietnamese society.

The calendar exists as a meeting of verbal and physical language that twist, curl, and bling, resting on each other for balance. Readers are free to take the pages home, crumple them in pockets, or repurpose them, as they so often are, as wrapping paper for their morning sticky rice.

10 AUGUST—21 SEPTEMBER. 2024. GALERIE QUYNH

The title of the work, ‘ON DA DREAM’, is a play on words that links the hopefulness of dreaming with the buoyant sensation of riding a motorcycle, particularly the Honda Dream a popular Japanese brand that first emerged in 1980s Vietnam during Doi Moi, a period of crucial socioeconomic reform, but is still found secondhand today.

In keeping with ON DA DREAM and Vy Trịnh’s transformation of ordinary materials, the curatorial text is presented as a calendar, aiming to engage the audience within the exhibition context.

Holding the pages in your hand, its words become tangible, perhaps, just as the words themselves try to capture Trịnh’s sculptural language in a knowingly futile yet necessary way.

The back of the calendar is made from 2mm oxidized stainless steel, inspired by the common material that often found in the motorbike repair shopsof Vietnam, carry a slew of tools to help you fix your means of transportation so you can quickly be on your way.
